Emergency Power Solution for Ethiopia’s Power Crisis

In 2008, Ethiopia faced a significant power shortage due to a severe drought that drastically reduced the water levels in the country’s hydroelectric dams. This led to widespread power outages and a pressing need for an immediate and reliable power supply solution

Solution

ENCOMM POWER proposed and implemented a turnkey solution involving the installation of a 30 MW diesel power plant. The key components and features of the solution included:

Capacity: 30 MW (33kV) power plant.
Equipment: 30 units of Caterpillar XQ2000 containerized 1,600 gensets, based on CAT 3516 engines.
Deployment: Mobilized and commissioned the plant in a record 60 days.
Operation: Supplied power to the national grid 24/7.
Maintenance: Full operations and maintenance provided by ENCOMM POWER.

Implementation

During the mobilization and commissioning phase, ENCOMM POWER’s engineering team worked tirelessly around the clock to deploy and commission the power plant within an impressive 60-day timeframe. The logistics were efficiently managed to ensure the seamless transportation and installation of the containerized gensets. Once operational, the plant provided a continuous and reliable power supply to the national grid 24/7. To maintain optimal performance, regular maintenance checks and real-time monitoring were implemented, ensuring the plant operated at peak efficiency.

The project faced several challenges, including logistical constraints due to the remote location, which required careful planning and execution to overcome transportation difficulties. Additionally, maintaining operational efficiency was crucial; this involved ensuring minimal downtime and promptly addressing any technical issues to maintain a steady power supply. Despite these challenges, ENCOMM POWER successfully delivered a robust and reliable emergency power solution for Ethiopia.
