Turkana, a remote and arid region in Kenya, faces significant electricity challenges, with only 35% of its population connected to the power grid. The lack of reliable electricity has impeded development and quality of life in the area. To address these challenges, ENCOMM POWER was engaged as the exclusive supplier for Kenya Power & Lighting Company’s (KPLC) off-grid system in Lodwar, with a mandate to provide continuous and reliable power.

Solution

ENCOMM POWER designed and implemented a comprehensive power solution to meet the region’s needs. The key components and features of the solution included:

Capacity: 5 MW (11kV) diesel power plant.
Equipment: Utilized six 1250 kVA Cummins KTA50G3 gensets.
Infrastructure: Included transformers and switchgear for efficient power distribution.
Operation: Provided continuous power supply, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Implementation

The project encountered several obstacles, such as the complexities of transporting equipment and personnel to Turkana’s remote location. The arid and semi-arid climate introduced additional hurdles, potentially impacting equipment functionality and maintenance routines. Furthermore, fostering trust and collaboration with the local community was essential for the project’s success.

Despite these issues, the deployment and installation phase proceeded smoothly. The power plant was swiftly established to address the urgent electricity demands of Lodwar. A robust infrastructure, including transformers and switchgear, was integrated to ensure effective power distribution.

The plant runs continuously, delivering a dependable power supply to the local grid. ENCOMM POWER’s team performs regular upkeep and real-time monitoring to maintain the plant’s peak efficiency. This proactive approach minimizes downtime and sustains high performance levels.
